The Province of Pontevedra is part of the Autonomous Community of Galicia and covers an area of 4500 sq. km. and is populated by circa 940.000 inhabitants. The capital has the same name and approx. 9% of the population resides here.
Pontevedra shares its borders with Portugal, Lugo, Ourense and La Coruña. The National park, Parque Nacional das Illas Atlánticas de Galicia also borders La Coruña. The coastline is facing west to the Atlantic Sea.
The City of Pontevedra is not the largest in the province but it is the capital. Here are many sights, museums and monuments to see. The Zona Monumental which is the old town, La Iglesia de Peregina and the market, Praza de Leña are among a few. Santa Maria, one of Christopher Colombus' ships, was built here.
The City of Vigo is the largest city in Pontevedra and the largest city in Spain, that is not a capital. Vigo is a port city, facing the Atlantic Sea. The Ponte Grande is the name of the bridge connecting the harbour known as Ría de Vigo. Among the things to see in Vigo are: Museo de Mar de Galica, Museo Municipal "Quiñones de León", Verbum - Casa das Palabras, Museo Etnográfico and Museo de Arte Contemporánea.
