Ourense is a part of the Autonomous Community of Galicia and is located in the north western part of Spain. The province has an are of about 7300 sq. km. and a population of just around 380.000 inhabitants. The capital has the same name and here lives approx. 110.000 residents.
The capital has three parts, modern, medieval and 19th. century expansion.
The Cathedral of Ourense is probably the most important monument in the province, but also many of the bridges crossing the river Minho, Rio Miño is of historical importance. Mostly, the bridge Ponte Vella, founded by the Romans and reconstructed in 1230 by the bishop Lorenzo. It is likely the most remarkable bridge structure in Spain, consisting of 7 arches and a span of 45 m. Another site, worth the mention, is the episcopal palace that today is converted into the Provincial Museum of Archeology.
Ourense is world famous for its chestnuts and is one of the largest producers in Europe.
