Murcia is the only province in the Autonomous Region of Murcia. Even the capital is of the same name, which easily and often leads to a bit confusion. The Province covers an area of 11300 sq. km. and has a population of 1.35 million, whereof about 425.000 lives in the capital.
The Airport of Murcia, San Javier is about 30 km. from the capitol but most travelers uses the airport in Alicante, El Altet for being better connected to the rest of Europe.
The capital is situated at the river Rio Segura in the valley Valle Segura. The river originates in Jaén in Fuente Segura and has its mouth in Alicante, Guadamar del Segura. The Mar Menor or small sea is a salt water lake and also the largest natural lake in Spain.
Things to see in Murcia:
Catedral Santa Mária and Plaza Cadenal Belluga, The Glorieta which is the former center of town, at present its housing the city hall, Plaza Santo de Domingo, sanctuary La Fuensanta, regional park El Vallle, Almudi Palace, Castillo de Monteagudo, Museo de Salzillo, museum and church San Juan de Dios, the water wheel Noria de la Ñora and the water reservoir Azud de la Contraparada.
There are also lots of events and festivals in Murcia, the last week before easter is the Holy Week and the locals dress up in their traditional outfits, the huertano to celebrate the Huerta parade, Bando de la Huerta and the burial of the sardine, Entierro de la Sardina.
One of the most famous personalities of Murcia would be Juan de la Cierva, who invented the first helicopter, also know as an Autogyro.
