Jaén is a province in the Autonomous Province of Andalucia. It covers an area of about 13.500 sq km. and has a population of around 660.000 inhabitants.
The Capital has the same name and is placed at the foothills of the Santa Catalina Mountains.
The Province of Jaén is known as the "inland paradise" or "paraíso interior", as the Spaniards would say. Located in the south-central part of the Iberian Peninsula with an outstanding climate for growing olives. And they do, in the province of Jaén - being the largest producer in the world - kilometer after kilometer of fields of olive trees sets the hilly landscape and the Virgin Olive Oil of this province is, of course, world famous.
Even though not one of the best known provinces in Spain, Jaén boasts no less than 4 national parks and the cities of Baeza and Úbeda is declared Heritage of Humanity by the world organization UNESCO.
Jaén also hosts an annual chess tournament that attracts some of the best players in the world.
Jaén Cathedral, world important for its renaissance style, dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin. Saint Catalina's Castle, The Arab Baths under the Palace of Villardompardo and the Museo Provincial de Jaén are among sights of great importance to anyone who is interested in architecture and history.
